The American College of Pediatricians is proud to file amicus or “friend of the court” briefs in cases where sound science is needed to assist the court in understanding the often-complex issues present in a particular case.  In each case, we seek to provide the court with high quality, evidence-based perspectives on issues affecting children so the court may hear a scientific perspective often at odds to the ideological perspective of interest groups and too many of the large medical organizations.  Sometimes the issues or implications of a ruling addressed in our brief are not fully discussed by the parties involved, which means our voice is the only one the judges hear on how a case affects children.  Without the American College of Pediatricians, the voices of pediatricians who simply want “what is best for children” go unheard when cases become political rather than focusing on the real-life implications for children and families from policies and practices at issue in a particular case.  Accordingly, our amicus program is a vital and integral part of what the American College of Pediatricians  does to help shape medical ethics and policy to promote the welfare of children and their families. This program is only possible with your generous support.
