American College of Pediatricians Applauds DOJ Action Involving Texas Children’s Hospital and Calls for Nationwide Investigation of Pediatric Gender Clinics

Atlanta, GA – The American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) applauds the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton for their landmark action involving Texas Children’s Hospital, including the establishment of America’s first detransition clinic and accountability measures related to pediatric sex-rejecting medical interventions.

Dr. Jill Simons, Executive Director of ACPeds released the following statement:

“This action represents an important step toward restoring evidence-based medicine, informed consent, and accountability in pediatric healthcare. Children experiencing sex-identity distress deserve compassionate, comprehensive care grounded in biological reality and long-term patient welfare.

ACPeds urges the DOJ to continue investigating pediatric gender clinics and hospital systems nationwide to determine whether similar violations of informed consent standards, federal law, billing practices, and patient protections have occurred elsewhere.

Any institution that has provided irreversible medical interventions to minors should also be required to provide comprehensive follow-up and detransition care for patients experiencing regret, complications, infertility concerns, endocrine dysfunction, psychological distress, or other adverse outcomes.”

ACPeds further calls for increased transparency regarding long-term outcomes, stronger informed consent protections, and independent oversight of pediatric gender clinics nationwide.

“Patients and families deserve honest information about the known and unknown risks of these interventions. Any institution that has participated in the medicalization of vulnerable children has an ethical obligation to provide ongoing care and support for those seeking to discontinue these interventions or address resulting complications.”
