ACPeds Commends FL AG James Uthmeier for Taking Legal Action Against Medical Organizations For Promoting Sex-Trait Interventions on Minors

Atlanta, GA – Yesterday, Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier announced that he will be taking legal action against several powerful medical organizations – the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH), the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the Endocrine Society (ES) – for promoting “mutilating children and misleading families.”

The American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds) has been sounding the alarm about the dangers of chemical and surgical interventions on children with sexual identity disorder for years. In 2023, ACPeds launched BiologicalIntegrity.org as a reliable medical resource on the topic of sexual identity disorder for parents, teens, physicians, schools, and policymakers.

President Dr. Michael Artigues responded to Florida’s legal action:

“On behalf of the entire community at the American College of Pediatricians, our leadership commends Attorney General Uthmeier’s bold action in defending vulnerable children. For too long, these organizations have spread a harmful agenda, leading minors, and their parents, to believe they can be born in the wrong body, and promoting unethical, life-altering sex-trait interventions as “treatment” for sexual identity disorder.

While ACPeds would prefer to see medical professionals come to this conclusion internally, litigation has historically often been at the forefront of change in our country, even in the area of healthcare. Perhaps this will inspire leaders in the medical community who have not yet recognized the dangers of sex-trait interventions to take another look at the evidence and do the right thing.”

Executive Director Dr. Jill Simons also responded in support of the Attorney General’s action:

“We want to commend Attorney General James Uthmeier and his appropriate legal action against these organizations. As expressed in his address, these organizations need to face legal consequences for continuing to promote harmful chemical and surgical interventions on minors while knowing the evidence is weak and the risks are many.”

Chair of ACPeds’ Adolescent Sexuality Committee Dr. Michelle Cretella added:

“Our Adolescent Sexuality Committee applauds Attorney General James Uthmeier. The leaders of WPATH, AAP, and ES knew a decade ago that pediatric gender medicine can irreversibly harm youth.

Additionally, several international systematic reviews of the science since 2019 have concluded that it is not safe or effective in treating gender dysphoria. With each systematic review, however, rather than move toward a position of caution, they doubled down on their false narrative even more. They and their members who engage in pediatric gender medicine are guilty of medical fraud and malpractice.”
